In 2012, Shropshire Wildlife Trust started a local Stretton Hills Botanical Survey Group. Subsequently, members of SACWG have joined with this group for surveys in and close to the Strettons area.
The survey is led by an experienced botanist who shows the group how to identify plants. However the eventual aim is for the group to gain enough confidence go out on their own. They venture into botanically interesting areas of the local countryside which are not normally accessible to the general public, where Shropshire Wildlife Trust has obtained special permission from the landowner. The overall atmosphere of these groups is very relaxed and members do not need to have experience of plants or of habitat management, as this will be explained by the survey leader. For regular surveyors, SWT offers free botanical training courses such as the “Grasses, Sedges and Rushes” training day at Brook Vessons and the “Dandelion Lookalikes” course at Llanymynech.
In June, 2013, a plant survey was conducted at the Coppice Leasowes Local Nature Reserve on the outskirts of Church Stretton. For a comprehensive listing of the over 150 species found, in MS Excel format, select this link.
In 2015, surveying was concentrated in and around the Hope Bowdler, Caer Caradoc and Cardington Hill areas with some memorable sights such as the extraordinary bluebell displays at Helmeth Wood and the beautiful round leaved-sundews at Hope Bowdler Hill. Group meetings were on Thursdays, with approximately 8 sessions between the end of April and the beginning of August, generally from mid-morning onwards.
The group carried out surveys at seven local sites between May and August 2019. Nearly botanical 500 species were identified, including 62 interesting indicator species, or axiophytes. You can view and download the 2019 Botanical Surveys report in PDF format here.
