The UK is ‘one of the most nature-depleted countries on Earth.’ Declines continue across most species groups, while habitats continue to be fragmented and are often in poor condition.
The Government has made a range of legally-binding commitments with the intention of addressing these declines and Local Nature Recovery Strategies are part of that work.
The Shropshire Strategy is one of 48 that cover the whole of England. It covers Shropshire, and Telford & Wrekin, local authority areas. It is being prepared by a multi-agency Steering Group, led by Shropshire Council and Natural England, and supported by a Species Group. Community Wildlife Groups and Shropshire Ornithological Society are stakeholders, and have commented on the proposed priority habitats and species.
A draft is being prepared for public consultation in June 2025, and it should be finalised in the autumn of 2025. The final version is likely to shape the work of Community Wildlife Groups for the following 3 – 10 years.
The presentation here outlines the process, and next steps.
