It was just a small group of us that gathered at the Mitchell’s Fold car park for our September
monthly walk. This was probably due to the weather warning that anticipated high winds and
heavy rain. However, it was dry when we arrived, but the clouds looked threatening over the
hills, and light rain started to fall as we left the car park walking on the main path towards
Mitchell’s Fold.
To start with, we had great views across to Corden Hill and Roundton Hill and there were
small flocks of meadow pipits and skylarks filling the skies in front of us as we moved along
the path. There was also plenty of fungi growing in the grassland, which, after looking it up
when we got back home, we decided it was likely to be False chanterelle. There were
families of stonechat perched on the gorse and a red legged partridge hunkering down
underneath a tree taking shelter from the bad weather.
The rain got progressively heavier and after braving the weather for a few hours and
enjoying a catch up with friends, we decided to all head back to our cars to go home and dry
off. It was certainly a fresh, wet and windy RVCWG monthly walk!
